Ashes Joe Root believes Jofra Archer adds a new dynamic to England

Joe Root has been left out of England’s T20 squad for their tour of South Africa.

England have released a 16-man squad for three T20 matches and the same amount of players for three ODIs, where Root does feature, while the Test match captain is also still in the plans for future T20 series.

The ODI series begins on 4 February, with the T20 series starting on 12 February.

And Worcestershire seamer Pat Brown, Somerset batsman Tom Banton and the Lancashire duo of Matthew Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood are all in the ODI squad and could therefore make their debuts.

Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, and Mark Wood have been rested for the ODIs, but will feature in the T20s.

“These two squads were selected with an eye on the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020,” national selector Ed Smith said.

“In the T20s, a number of players who were rested for the successful 3-2 victory in New Zealand return to the squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Jason Roy.

“We want to expand the pool of players who can perform successfully for England, while also helping the team to peak for major tournaments.”
