Captain Gale hits the ground running with a century to lift Yorkshire

Leading by example is surely the most prized skill to captaincy and so Andrew Gale will be chuffed to have marked his first home match in charge of Yorkshire with a century yesterday.

The 26-year-old racked up 101 before falling victim to Somerset's Zander de Bruyn, helping to ease his side out of trouble after they lost three quick wickets after lunch in the Championship's First Division match at Headingley. At that stage Yorkshire were 142 for 5 but with England all-rounder Tim Bresnan making 61, by stumps they had advanced to 320-7, giving them a lead of 48 with three first-innings wickets to spare.

Ryan Sidebottom struck three times as Nottinghamshire firmly moved into the driving seat against Kent at Trent Bridge. The England seamer removed Joe Denly, Rob Key and Matt Coles as the visitors stumbled to 200 all out in answer to Nottinghamshire's first innings score of 456. Sidebottom claimed his three wickets for 31 runs. Kiwi Andre Adams bagged 4 for 63, then took another wicket as Kent finished the day on 50 for 2 in their follow-on.

At Old Trafford Ian Bell top scored on 47 for a Warwickshire side who made 254 for a first innings lead of a solitary run. Continuing his comeback after a knee problem, England seamer Jimmy Anderson added a second wicket to his account – that of Jonathan Trott – returning figures of 2 for 62 from 20 overs. Lancashire finished the day with their second innings score at 84 for 2.

Surrey confirmed that they are in discussion with Brian Lara, the former West Indies opener, about joining the First Division club "in some capacity''. The Trinidadian, now 40, retired from international cricket after the 2007 World Cup and has not played for two years but the dashing left-hander has been spotted in the Oval nets.

It is understood that the county want him to play in this summer's Friends Provident Twenty20 tournament, for which they have already signed Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds and Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla as two of their four permitted overseas players.
