Cricket: West Indians at a loss against spin

The West Indies' familiar failings against spin returned to haunt them in Colombo and left the one-off Test against Sri Lanka finely balanced at the end of the third day. Sri Lanka, playing with just one quick bowler, dismissed them for 204 and then reached 43 for 2 in the second innings, a lead of 29, at the close. All 10 West Indian wickets fell to the spinners. An 84-run fifth-wicket partnership between their captain, Richie Richardson, and Carl Hooper was the highlight for the West Indies. Pakistan were also finding it difficult to subdue Zimbabwe in their Test at Rawalpindi where they finished the third day with their second innings teetering on 40 for 3, just 31 runs ahead. Zimbabwe had made 254 in response to Pakistan's 245. It looked like being more when Zimbabwe reached 203 for 5 but Waqar Younis ripped out three of the last four wickets to fall. Janet Entwistle and Sue Grainger failed yesterday in their attempt to become the first women members of the Lancashire committee.
