A HAT-TRICK by Vince Wells put Leicestershire back on the Championship trail after their loss to Yorkshire on Monday. It could have been even better because they had Durham 109 for 7, but Simon Brown's career-best 69 helped the home side to the vague respectability of 225 all out as rain halted play for the day.

Wells had Phil Bainbridge and Anderson Cummins caught at second slip by Phil Simmons and Chris Scott was lbw playing across a full-length ball.

Richard Montgomerie, this year's Oxford University captain, hit 151 - his maiden Championship century - as Derbyshire's decision to bowl backfired. He hit 24 fours in his 310-ball stay, helping Northamptonshire to a formidable 409 for 4 and shared a second-wicket partnership of 189 with Rob Bailey (93).

Mark Feltham took advantage of a green Old Trafford pitch to claim four wickets as Lancashire crumbled to 163 all out. Middlesex lost Desmond Haynes for a duck but Mike Gatting and Mike Roseberry compiled a half century stand before they fell in successive balls.
