JONTY RHODES, of South Africa, achieved a one-day record for catches by an outfielder in the 41-run defeat of the West Indies yesterday in the Five Nations Tournament being held in Bombay.

Rhodes, the man of the match, took five catches in a match reduced to 40 overs, brilliant takes dismissing Phil Simmons, Brian Lara and Anderson Cummins. He also held on to chances offered by Desmond Haynes and Jimmy Adams.

He also scored 40, putting on 65 for the fourth wicket with Daryll Cullinan, who hit an unbeaten 70 before heat exhaustion forced him to retire. The off-spinner Pat Symcox was the most successful South African bowler, with three wickets.
