Robin Reid was released from the hospital last night after collapsing from exhaustion following his World Boxing Council super-middleweight title defense in Widnes on Thursday night.

Reid, who beat challenger Hassine Cherifi on a split decision in stifling conditions, was taken to Whiston Hospital.

He collapsed in his dressing room a few minutes after the bout.

The dehydrated Reid never lost consciousness but was kept until yesterday afternoon for observation. The dehydration was apparently caused by the heat generated from overhead television lights.

n Leonard Read has been elected as President of the British Boxing Board of Control. Read succeeds Sir David Hopkin who died last month. In the 1960s, the pair were instrumental in convicting the Kray twins. Read has been vice chairman under Sir David's chairmanship since 1988 until he took over as chairman last year.
