A CLASSIC confrontation between two of the great quarterbacks of their generation came to a thrilling climax in Mile High Stadium, with Joe Montana showing yet again why many rate him the greatest ever at his position, writes Matt Tench.

John Elway put the Denver Broncos 28-24 ahead with 1min 29sec remaining, only for Montana to clinch a 31-28 victory for the Kansas City Chiefs with just eight seconds left. Montana's winning touchdown pass, his third of the game, was a five-yarder to Willie Davis.

Montana completed seven of his eight passes on the final drive which covered 74 yards in 61 seconds. 'They were dropping off and we kept moving the ball,' Montana said. 'He (Davis) made a great catch, and a great effort getting in the end zone.'
