Moscow - Russia's Prime Minister, Viktor Chernomyrdin, was reported to have resigned, but this was dismissed as an 'absurd rumour' by his office, writes Andrew Higgins. It quoted 'informed circles close to the Russian President'.

Itar-Tass news agency promptly issued a denial.
