Ideal Progress, the first ship carrying genetically modified soyabeans from the US, was due to dock at Hamburg, where it faced protests.

US harvesters of the beans, developed by Monsanto corporation to be resistant to one of its herbicides, are not separating them from normal ones and products made with them, including 30,000 foods, will not be labelled as such. Yet a survey for Greenpeace says 73 per cent of German consumers would avoid such products.
