Talbott confirmed
The Senate confirmed Strobe Talbott as second-in-command at the State Department though his nomination had sparked protests over his criticism of US policy on Israel, AFP reports from Washington. The chamber voted 66-31 to confirm Mr Talbott, a friend of President Clinton, as deputy secretary of state. He has beenserving as ambassador-at-large for the former Soviet republics.
