Moldovan government resigns

CHISINAU (Reuter) - The government of Moldova formally stepped down yesterday, acknowledging it could not cope with acute economic problems deepened by civil conflict. Andrei Sangela, the Agriculture Minister, is expected to be appointed as prime minister today. Two Moldovans were killed and three wounded during overnight fighting in the separatist stronghold of Bendery, the Moldovan Defence Ministry said yesterday. Bendery's central police station, where a United Nations fact-finding mission and an American diplomat were trapped by gunfire on Monday, was attacked during the fighting, which continued into early yesterday.
