Several people have been run over at a fairground in Spain, local media has reported.

It is thought the driver lost control and mounted the pavement and hit a number of students from Carolina Coronado school in the town of Almendralejo.

Four people were struck by the car, one of whom is currently in critical condition.

Images that have been shared on social media show what is thought to be the car in question, a badly damaged silver Peugeot, on the side of the road.

Officials confirmed that the accident was a "mistake" by the driver.

"[The driver] crossed the left lane, has invaded the parking area, has risen on the sidewalk and has ended up hitting a tree," authorities told Hoy.

Almendralejo is a town in the Province of Badajoz and is located on main road and rail route between Mérida and Seville.

The population of the town is approximately 35,000.
