BERLIN (Reuter) - A Berlin court ruled that Erich Honecker, the former East German leader, must stay in jail pending trial for manslaughter despite having liver cancer. 'This decision proves that the court wants to pursue the case against Honecker in a race with death,' his lawyer said.

The court ordered Mr Honecker, 80, to be kept in prison to prevent him from fleeing the country. The charges stem from the shootings of East Germans trying

to flee across the Berlin Wall and along the former inter-German border.
