Man and woman fell into 200m ravine, local media says

A British man and woman in their 20s have died in a buggy accident on the Greek island of Santorini.

The pair, both said to be 26, fell into a 200m ravine while driving on the Profitis Ilias mountain on Sunday, local media reported.

A spokesman at the Greek fire service’s headquarters in Athens said firefighters were called to an accident on the mountain at 2.27pm.

Eight firefighters and two vehicles attended the scene, with the fire service response finishing at 2.36am on Monday.

The spokesman confirmed a man and a woman, both aged 26, had died in the accident.

The peak of Profitis Ilias is the highest point on the Greek island, which is popular with British holidaymakers.

Santorini is in the south of the Aegean Sea, south east of the Greek capital Athens.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the deaths of two Britons.

A spokesman said: ”Our staff are assisting the families of two British people who have died on the island of Santorini, and are in contact with the Greek authorities.”
