Three men have been arrested and are in custody following an alleged gang rape in a park near the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

A police official told the Associated Press - on condition of anonymity - that it is believed that female victim was lured to the Champ-de-Mars garden, adjacent to the iconic landmark, via messages on Facebook.

One man is suspected of using the social media platform to arrange a "date" in the gardens with the woman on 11 September.

“It was a warm night, and she expected to eat strawberries and grapes, and to drink Coke, but then the attack took place,” a source with knowledge of the investigation told the Mail Online.

She was found by members of the public in the park in the early hours of the morning.

Three Algerian men were arrested in a Paris hotel under suspicion of taking part in the attack.

“An enquiry is underway to try and work out exactly who they are, and what they were doing in France,” said the Mail’s source.

The men were reportedly trying to make their way to Germany before they were arrested.
