Costa Rica picks a leader
Costa Rica went to the polls to elect a president yesterday after a very close campaign, AP reports from San Jose. The opposition candidate, Jose Maria Figueres, has vowed to modernise the welfare state created by his late father, the former president Jose 'Pepe' Figueres. But the National Liberation Party candidate faces a formidable adversary in Miguel Angel Rodriguez of the ruling Social Christian Unity Party.
