China expels US academic
Peking (Reuter) - The US academic Ross Terrill has been expelled from China for his involvement with the case of the arrested dissident Shen Tong. A spokeswoman for the Peking Public Security Bureau said 'he conducted actions incompatible with his status as a tourist'.
Mr Terrill, an Australian- born US citizen, is on the advisory board of Mr Shen's US- based Democracy for China Fund. Mr Shen was arrested on Tuesday shortly before meeting journalists to discuss his month- long return from exile in the US. He was a student leader of the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations.
