Chiapas rebels ponder peace

Maya Indian guerrilla leaders in southern Mexico headed back to their jungle bases to debate government promises of sweeping reforms in return for ending a two-month uprising, Reuter reports from San Cristobal.

Eleven rebel chiefs left here after 10 days of peace talks ended with a tentative accord on land reform, democracy and justice, and investment in poor Indian villages. They will now consult some 2,000 fighters and pro-rebel villages on whether to accept the offer and sign a peace treaty.
