Cash crisis hits glasnost paper
Moscow - A maverick Russian daily launched in 1990 under Mikhail Gorbachev's policy of glasnost indefinitely suspended publication yesterday, citing a lack of funds. It receives no money from the state budget.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta (The Independent), which has been become strongly critical of President Boris Yeltsin, said it planned to set up a joint stock company in hopes of resuming operation and announced a subscription for its stock. A spokesman for the Gorbachev Foundation, the former Soviet president's think tank, said: "We think Russia needs Nezavisimaya and the Gorbachev Foundation without any doubts will give some financial support to the newspaper."
