Burundi's military leader, Jean-Pierre Buyoya, was unexpectedly beaten in the country's first democratic election by his challenger, Melchior Ndadaye, Reuter reports from Bujumbura.

Mr Ndadaye, a Hutu, polled more than 60 per cent; Mr Buyoya, a Tutsi who seized power in a 1987 coup, had been tipped to win.
