Two British doctors drowned near a popular island off the east coast of Australia, a lifesaving organization said today.

A spokeswoman for Surf Life Saving Queensland said the 30-year-old man and 29-year-old woman drowned Thursday.

They were caught in a rip - a powerful tide - at Main Beach near Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island, just off the coast from the Queensland state capital of Brisbane.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released because not all their family members had been notified.

The drownings of the two tourists brought to nine the number of people who have died swimming off Queensland beaches in recent months.
