A mexican has been executed in Texas for raping and murdering a teenager in 1994 after the US Supreme Court turned down an appeal, despite calls from the White House for a stay.

In his last minutes, Humberto Leal, a 38-year-old mechanic, repeatedly apologised and accepted responsibility. "I have hurt a lot of people. I take full blame," he said.

He was sentenced to death by lethal injection for the murder of 16-year-old Adria Sauceda. His lawyers say he was denied consular assistance after his arrest.
