Wallace gunman free after 35 years

The man who shot and paralysed former US presidential candidate and Alabama governor George Wallace was released from prison on Friday after serving 35 years of his sentence. Arthur Bremer, 57, left the Maryland prison before sunrise, with no word left behind on his destination or plans.

Mr Wallace was wounded on 15 May 1972, during a campaign stop in Laurel, Maryland. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair and died in 1998. Bremer was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 53 years.

He had been held at the Maryland Correctional Institution since 1979. He earned his mandatory release through good behaviour and by working in prison. Bremer's diary made it clear he was motivated to kill Mr Wallace by a desire for attention, not a political agenda. He had also stalked Richard Nixon.
