The Statue of Liberty will close at the end of October for a year as it undergoes a $27.25m (£17m) renovation that will make its interior safer and more accessible.
Liberty Island will remain open during the renovations and exterior views of the New York landmark will be mostly unobstructed.
On an average summer Saturday about 18,000 sightseers visit Liberty Island.
