Rescue teams in Fort Worth, Texas, were searching yesterday for any additional victims of a giant tornado that ripped through its city centre area just after the rush hour on Tuesday evening. By last night, authorities said the storm had killed four people and injured about 100 others.
The centre of the city, 30 miles west of Dallas, was sealed off to allow the clean-up to begin. Among buildings worst hit by the winds was the Bank One Tower. Sheathed in glass, countless of its windows were punched in by the pressure of the twister. "Our biggest concern is getting the glass out of these tall buildings," a city spokeswoman said.
Two of the victims died when high winds swept their car into a river. Another was struck by debris while the fourth person was killed in a building collapse.
