Three people have reportedly been killed and several left injured after two explosions in the coastal city of Mombasa in Kenya.

The three fatalities occurred when a grenade was hurled at a crowd near the Mwembe Tayari bus station in central Mombasa, according to the interior ministry.

The second happened in Nyali Beach just north of the city, where an explosive device was left at the gate of a hotel. No one was injured.

The county commissioner for Mombasa, Nelson Marwa, arrived at the Mwembe Tayari scene and confirmed twin grenade attacks.

Kenya has been hit by a wave of gun and explosive attacks since it sent its troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabab militants in 2011. The al-Qa'ida-linked militants have vowed to carry out terrorist attacks on Kenyan soil to avenge the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia.
