The winners of the World Press Photo awards 2019 have been announced.

John Moore’s photograph of a young girl crying as she and her mother are detained after crossing into the US from Mexico won the €10,000 (£8,600) top prize.

Prizes were also given for the best pictures from individual categories including sport, nature and environment photography to name a few.

All of the nominated pictures will be included in a year-long exhibition that will tour around the world and be seen by an estimated 4 million people.

The Independent has compiled the winning pictures and runners up in the gallery above.
