Barry George was this afternoon found guilty of murdering the television presenter Jill Dando.

The Old Bailey jury returned a majority verdict after five days of deliberation.

Barry George, 41, unemployed from Crookham Road, Fulham, south west London, had denied murdering Miss Dando on April 26, 1999.

Miss Dando was shot through the head in the doorway of her home in Gowan Avenue, Fulham.

George denied being at the scene when the murder was committed.

The judge said: "You have deprived Miss Dando's fiance, family and friends of a much loved and popular personality."

He added: "You are unpredictable and dangerous... There can be no doubt that it was premeditated involving some planning ... Why you did it will never be known."

George's legal team immediately announced it was organising an appeal against the conviction.
