Woman phoned 999 to report her mum dead – but actually she was just drunk

A woman has been left relieved after dialing 999 for an ambulance because she thought her mother was dead, only to find she was actually just “drunk”.

The woman, living in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, contacted emergency services on Sunday asking for paramedics after supposedly discovering her mother dead.

However, before ambulance services could respond, her seemingly lifeless mother “woke up” and "came on the line" to reveal she was not dead, just highly intoxicated.

Relaying the incident over Twitter Greater Manchester Police said the pair were now “in high spirits” after the incident.

The call comes after the Metropolitan Police revealed the most pointless 999 calls it had received last year.

The calls included a woman who was angry a clown was selling balloons for £5 and another who wanted to complain about her cold kebab.

Some people had called the emergency line in distress while driving, as the low fuel indicator light had illuminated on their dashboards.

The list of 10 example calls, which did not merit a police response, were released by the Met to urge members of the public to only call 999 in genuine emergencies.
