A woman has died after falling from a cliff while out walking with her husband, according to police.

At about 3pm yesterday, the couple were at Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, East Sussex, when the "tragic accident" happened.

A Sussex Police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious and a file would be passed to the coroner.

He said: "Just before 3pm yesterday, police were called to Beachy Head by the Belle Tout lighthouse after a woman was seen to fall from the top of the cliff.

"Her body was recovered from the base of the cliff by the Coastguard shortly afterwards.

"She is believed to be a 49-year-old female not from the Sussex area.

"Her husband was present at the time of the tragic accident but the death is not being treated as suspicious and no one has been arrested and no one is expected to be arrested.

"The coroner will be informed."
