An 18-month-old girl suffered a serious head injury after falling out of an open first floor window today, police said.

The accident happened at about 8.20am when the toddler fell from the lounge window at a block of flats in Grosvenor Road, Skegness, Lincolnshire.

She hit her head on the pavement below, suffering a serious injury and was taken to nearby Boston Pilgrim Hospital with her mother at her side.

The youngster was later transferred by helicopter to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, which has a specialist head injury unit.

It is understood she has a bleed on her brain, following what is thought to have been a tragic accident.

A statement from Lincolnshire Police said: "The scene has been secured and officers are investigating the cause of the fall from a first floor flat."
