Raoul Moat 'planned to turn dead badger into a hat'
Raoul Moat planned to skin a dead badger and turn it into a hat, a court has heard.
A jury at Newcastle Crown Court heard that Moat, 37, spotted the roadkill after shooting policeman David Rathband on 3 July last year before telling his alleged accomplice, Qhuram Awan, to stop by the side of the road. Moat then picked up the dead badger and carried it to his hideout in Rothbury, Northumberland. The court was told that he later ordered Mr Awan, 23, to buy some needle and thread so that he could sew the remains into a hat.
Moat's alleged accomplices, Mr Awan and Karl Ness, deny conspiracy to murder, the attempted murder of Pc Rathband, a firearms offence and robbery of a chip shop.
