Unsettled weather that has confounded sports fans and gardeners and forced high-profile concert cancellations is set to change for the better – then turn worse.

Forecasters predict "more sunshine, fewer showers, lighter winds and a warmer feel" after rainfall and gusts of up to 84mph across Britain. Last week saw rainfall of 127mm in parts of Wales and flooding as storms hit. An Atlantic storm had been predicted to be a "once-in-50-years occurrence". Sunshine and showers are being predicted for today. "It's looking like the temperature will be close to the season average and won't be as unsettled as it has been," said a Met Office spokeswoman.

The outlook from tomorrow to Thursday promises more bright spells and showers in the north and west. Tuesday will have the best weather, with highs of up to 22C in the south-east. But on Thursday heavy rain will spread from the west, while unsettled weather conditions are expected to return.
