POLICE refused to send a six stone pensioner to prison on health grounds after magistrates sentenced her to 20 days for not paying her poll tax. Magistrates ordered Dorothy Pittaway, 64, to Risley remand centre, Cheshire, in her absence after she failed to attend court. But police were unhappy about her physical state and a police surgeon declared her unfit to remain in custody.
