Sean O'Donogh, 25, appeared at Dublin's Special Criminal Court charged with possession of explosives in Dundalk between August 13 and August 15, 1998, the day of the atrocity which killed 29 people.

O'Donogh, of Finnabar Crescent, Dundalk, was arrested on Saturday morning after police searched his home and found an incendiary device in a car outside.

Four booster tubes, two rounds of ammunition, a balaclava and gloves are also believed to have been found.

He was remanded in custody until next Tuesday.

Last night the Garda Siochana, the Irish police, released a second man without charge.

That man, who is in his 30s and was also arrested on Saturday, had been held at the Garda Siochana base in Monaghan in connection with the Real IRA bombing.

Over the past seven days, six individuals have been arrested and questioned about the atrocity, but five have been released without charge.

The Omagh car bomb was the worst single outrage in the history of the Northern Ireland-linked disturbances. It also injured more than 200 people.

Earlier this month the BBC TV Panorama programme named four men it said were suspects for the bomb attack.
