Baby hit by fallen lamppost fights for life

A baby boy is fighting for his life after he was hit by a falling lamppost today.

A 62-year-old woman was also seriously injured when the lamppost toppled over in Chiswick, west London, shortly before 10.30am.

The baby, thought to be about a year old, was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital, in east London.

The woman suffered a back injury and was taken by ambulance to Charing Cross Hospital in west London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 10.36am today to reports of two pedestrians injured by a fallen lamppost in Sutton Court Road at the junction with Heathfield Terrace.

"Officers, London Ambulance Service and HEMS (helicopter emergency medical service) attended.

"An elderly woman was taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital.

"A one-year-old child was taken to hospital by HEMS.

"Road closures remain in place."

An ambulance service spokesman said they were called at 10.30am to Heathfield Terrace and treated two patients at the scene.

"A baby, around one-year-old, was taken to the Royal London Hospital by air ambulance.

"A 62-year-old woman was taken to Charing Cross Hospital with a back injury."
