Flash floods and series of heavy thunderstorms mark end of heatwave

Further thunderstorms loom after flash flooding that hit up to 100 homes in Nottingham, marking the end of Britain's heatwave.

Southwell residents are now attempting to salvage their possessions amid a clean-up operation by the local council.

A month's rain fell in just a few hours, with homes in Kirklington Road and Halloughton Road believed to be among the worst affected areas.

A Nottingham force spokesman said pockets of standing water remain in various locations and drivers are being urged to take caution on the roads.

They are also advised to be aware that, in some areas, damage has been caused to drain covers and there is debris in the roads.

An advice centre was opened in Southwell Town Hall, The Burgage, Southwell, for those who needed flood-related advice or assistance.

Nottingham Council were called to deal with storm damage in 17 different areas and are expected to be working on a clean-up operation through-out Wednesday night.

"An incredible amount of rain fell yesterday in a short space of time and when this happens unfortunately some flooding will always occur," Councillor Jane Urquhart, Portfolio Member for Planning and Transportation told ITV.

"We put together a team of staff who were ready to respond to calls from residents, hand out sand bags and deal with incidents of storm damage across the city. A big thank you to them for their hard work last night."

100 calls were responded to and 250 sandbags were distributed to residents, according to the network.

Severn Trent has reported seeing double the amount of calls made to its call centre during the spate of bad weather, with many asking for advice on how to report flash flooding. The Environment Agency has also issued flood warnings for the Wye Estuary area in Gloucestershire.

The Met Office are now predicting unsettled weather across the UK, with thundery downpours across the southeast of England on Saturday.
