Black law students claim race bias

THREE black law students yesterday said in the High Court that they were victims of racial discrimination in the legal profession.

They asked for permission to bring a test case challenging refusals by the Council of Legal Education to certify that they had successfully completed the Bar vocational course, which is vital to their careers.

The students applied for leave to seek judicial review on the grounds that the CLE had organised the course in a way which was unfair, unlawful and discriminated against them because of their race.

Mr Justice Potts adjourned their applications, and said the quickest way to investigate their grievances would be to appeal to the Board of Visitors to the Inns of Court.
