Capello calls on Wolves’ Jarvis

Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has been called into the England squad for forthcoming matches against Wales and Ghana. Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has returned to the squad having missed the Denmark friendly through injury.

England prepare to face Sri Lanka

England will travel to Colombo to play Sri Lanka in the World Cup quarter-finals, after India beat West Indies yesterday. It means that England avoid playing Pakistan, who inflicted Australia’s first World Cup defeat since 1999 on Saturday. MORE

Rangers seal cup win in extra-time

Rangers won the League Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win over Celtic. Steven Davis put Rangers ahead in the first half but a Joe Ledley header equalised soon after. The winner came on 98 minutes, as Nikica Jelavic raced through and scored off the post. MORE

Federer drops to No 3 in the world

Roger Federer will no longer be in the top two of the men’s world rankings when they are released this morning. Since November 2003, he has spent all but 11 weeks as No 1 or No 2 but Novak Djokovic will overtake him, having beaten the Swiss on Saturday.

Liverpool win after disputed penalty

A controversial penalty helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win at Sunderland yesterday. Dirk Kuyt converted after a John Mensah foul on Jay Spearing that happened outside the box. In the second half, Luis Suarez scored an excellent goal from a tight angle. MORE

Farah triumphs in New York

Britain’s Mo Farah won the New York City half-marathon yesterday in a debut over the distance. Farah put his track speed to good use to outsprint Ethiopia’s Gebre Gebremariam in a tight finish. Farah surged past him to win in a time of one hour and 23 seconds.

Luiz heads Chelsea back into title race

Two late goals from David Luiz and Ramires sent Chelsea up to third in the table after a 2-0 home win over Manchester City yesterday. The match took a long time to get going, with Manchester City cautiously arranged and missing their captain and top scorer Carlos Tevez. In search of a goal, Carlo Ancelotti brought on Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka in the second half, and with 12 minutes left a Drogba free-kick was headed in by Luiz. Ramires added a late second. Ancelotti could leave this summer

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has conceded he may leave the club in the summer. “If one party – the club or myself – is not happy to continue, we’ll have to split,” he said. Chief executive Ron Gourlay said the Italian’s role would be reviewed after the season. MORE

Gloucester secure LV= Cup at last

Gloucester won the first silverware of the season by defeating Newcastle Falcons 34-7 at Franklin’s Gardens to win the LV= Cup at the third attempt. Bryan Redpath’s side dominated early thanks to Tom Voyce’s try and Nicky Robinson’s kicking.
