Kelly’s a hero for Sunderland

Sunderland Ladies secured promotion to the top flight of the Women’s Super League on the final day of the campaign, by earning a comfortable 4-0 victory over Millwall Lionesses at the Den yesterday.

Kelly McDougall (above centre), Rachel Furness, Keira Ramshaw and Abbey Joice all found the net as they clinched the FA Women’s Super League 2 title.

Sunderland won the title ahead of Doncaster Rovers Belles, who finished second even though they thrashed London Bees 9-0.

Celtic rise to fourth with home victory

Celtic leapfrogged Kilmarnock into fourth in the Scottish Premiership with a 2-0 home win over the Ayrshire side yesterday. Killie captain Manuel Pascali was sent off for a professional foul, with striker John Guidetti scoring from the resulting free-kick. Stefan Scepovic scored the second. In the Championship, Alim Ozturk’s late strike levelled Dominique Malonga’s effort to earn Hearts a point at Hibernian.

Matthews shines as Quins win

Harlequins earned a 23-16 away win over Wasps as they moved level on points with Leinster at the top of Pool 2 of the European Champions Cup. The impressive Charlie Matthews scored and Nick Evans kicked two conversions and three penalties to help Quins win.

Murray on track for Finals with win

Andy Murray took a huge step towards sealing his place at the ATP World Tour Finals as he claimed his third title in the space of five weeks, clinching the Valencia Open. He saved five match points against Tommy Robredo before winning 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, the result taking him into fifth spot in the “Race to London”. The eight players who have earned the most ranking points in 2014 qualify for the event.

Giles urges Cellino to leave Leeds

Leeds United legend Johnny Giles says the club’s owner, Massimo Cellino, should “get out of the club” after he sacked head coach Darko Milanic on Saturday, with academy manager Neil Redfearn set to take over. Milanic was sacked after 32 days at the helm of the Championship club, having failed to win any of his six games in charge. He became the third managerial casualty of Cellino’s controversial six-month reign.
