British trio round off record week in style

Great Britain completed a record eight medal haul at the European Gymnastics Championships in Montpellier as Becky Downie, Sam Oldham and Claudia Fragapane all collected silver. Downie added a podium finish from the beam event to her second place on the bars on Saturday, while Oldham’s second in the high bars and Fragapane’s floor routine capped a memorable event. Downie scored 14.300 points, behind Andreea Eugenia Munteanu, of Romania.

Dujardin wins double in Vegas

Charlotte Dujardin and her horse Valegro have become the first dressage pair to hold Olympic, world, European and World Cup titles simultaneously, as well as all three world records. The Briton completed a double at the World Cup in Las Vegas on Saturday when she won the Grand Prix Freestyle. Dujardin followed up her win in Thursday’s Grand Prix by scoring 94.196 per cent. “It’s an incredible feeling,” she enthused..

Rea celebrates double success

Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea tightened his grip on the World Superbike Championship with a double success at the Cathedral of Speed at Assen in the Netherlands, followed home in both races by Chaz Davies’ Ducati.

In British Superbikes, James Ellison won both races at Brands Hatch, while series leader Shane Byrne came second twice.

Scott sent off as City lose to Arsenal

Manchester City and England midfielder Jill Scott was sent off as her team fell to 1-0 defeat by Arsenal in Women’s Super League 1 yesterday. Arsenal struck the decisive goal in the 36th minute, as Chioma Ubogagu scored past goalkeeper Alex Brooks. Scott was then shown a straight red card after the interval for a headbutt, after the 28-year-old reacted to a challenge from Gunners defender Jade Bailey.

Britain fall short in promotion bid

Great Britain had to settle for silver at the World Championships in Eindhoven yesterday. They failed to get the point needed from their match against Lithuania as they lost 3-2, meaning they lost out on gold to Korea and, vitally, promotion from Division 1B. On Saturday, GB had beaten the hosts, the Netherlands, 3-2 – a fourth straight win which set up their chance of promotion to Division 1A for the first time since 1993.
