Obituary: Vincent Schaefer
Vincent Schaefer, chemist, died Schenectady, New York 25 July, aged 87. A self-taught chemist, he became famous when he showed that rain could be provoked by dropping a mixture of ice and carbon dioxide on to a cloud. A worker at General Electric's research laboratory, he also developed a filter for gas masks and a machine for making smoke clouds.
