Miguel Marmol, rebel leader and politician, died 25 June, aged 88. One of the founders of the Salvadoran Communist Party, he was known as 'the Red Ghost' for his record of close escapes from army ambushes and manhunts. A leading figure in the 1932 revolt known as the 'La Matanza' (the massacre), he survived a firing squad, and went on to fight against a succession of rightist governments.
