Obituary: Gordon Cullen
THE OBITUARY of Gordon Cullen (by Dan Cruickshank, 17 August) described his work as architect, thinker and writer, but made no mention of his other great gift: he was a quite outstanding artist, writes Ruari McLean. Cullen drew architecture - and especially architecture with people, because that was his particular interest - brilliantly, perhaps better than anyone in this century.
The major collection of his drawings in a book was his own Townscape, in line and tone, making as always excellent use of mechanical tints. He also provided colour-line drawings for Inside the Pub (1950); drawings for covers and illustrations for the Architectural Review and other periodicals; two exquisite line drawings for A Short Guide to St Mary Woolnoth (1955); and a variety of superb illustrative panels for the Festival of Britain. It is as an artist that I believe he will be longest remembered.
