Romuald Bukowski, politician, died Gdansk 19 October, aged 64. Only deputy in the Communist parliament who voted against General Jaruzelski's introduction of martial law in 1981 to suppress the Solidarity movement. A draughtsman and designer, he organised help for artists left jobless after martial law.
Takashi Hasegawa, politician, died Tokyo 19 October, aged 80. A former justice minister, he was an influential member of the governing Liberal Democratic Party.
