Obama ridicules Trump for having his Twitter taken away from him

Donald Trump’s aides have taken control of his Twitter account just days ahead of the presidential election.

The Republican nominee has become renowned for his inflammatory tweets during his 2016 campaign, however, his staff are now doubling down on their efforts to present him as a confident and viable candidate for the presidency, the New York Times reports.

Mr Trump has often used the account to influence the news agenda, sometimes with just one single tweet.

On 20 September, the business mogul posted a stream of tweets after former Miss Universe Alicia Machado spoke out about the way he allegedly treated her following her pageant win in 1996.

He called Democratic rival Hillary Clinton "crooked" and accused her of being "duped" by Ms Machado's story.

Now, on the eve of the vote, tweets from Mr Trump’s @realDonaldTrump account are looking uncharacteristically “on message” according to the New York Times, whose piece was based on interviews with dozens of aides, operatives, supporters and advisers

Though Mr Trump still dictates tweets to his press team, including spokeswoman Hope Hicks, they reportedly now now vet and edit those suggestions before they are published.

Mr Trump's camp will be hoping extra efforts in previously all-blue states such as New Hampshire could swing the vote in his favour.

Ms Clinton is marginally ahead in the US election polls, however many analysts believe there are too many factors influencing votes, which make the presidential race too close to call.
