Amy Schumer gives a shoutout to her tampon on Emmys red carpet.

Women have long been asked the same mundane, gendered questions on the red carpet. Often as they attend ceremonies to honour the highlights in their careers questions are limited to their appearance with the age-old question, "Who are you wearing?" being tirelessly repeated.

So Amy Schumer chose to switch things up when she was asked about her wardrobe while walking the Emmy red carpet on Sunday evening.

When E! News’ veteran red carpet interviewer Giuliana Rancic put the question to Schumer and her sister Kim, the Trainwreck star was quick to leave no-one out, crediting the brands of their dresses, shoes - and her tampon.

“Vivienne Westwood [dress], Tom Ford shoes and an OB tampon,” Schumer said before breaking out into a dance, while Rancic appeared unclear as to how to respond to the frank answer.

The 35-year-old was praised for both challenging gendered questions on the red carpet and breaking the period taboo by reminding viewers at home that even famous women at award shows menstruate.

Amy Poehler led the calls for reporters to ask actresses more in 2015 with her #SmartGirlsAsk campaign.

The campaign made a return to the red carpet at the annual television awards by asking Ariel Winter about the women who inspire her on television and Kristen Bell about what happiness means to her.
