"Silly hats and pints of fairly rubbish Guinness are mandatory" accompaniments when posting in the Twittersphere on March 17, say microbloggers celebrating St Patrick's day.

"It's the one day of the year where everyone pretends to like Guinness, [in order] to get a free hat," joked a Twitter user making use of the trending terms "Guinness" and "Happy St Patricks."

The annual holiday is celebrated on March 17 every year in honor of Ireland's patron saint, Saint Patrick. The Saint Patrick's-inspired terms, "Happy St Patricks", "Irish," and "Guinness" are trending at numbers four, five and eight respectively.

When not cracking jokes about the Irish or boasting about how drunk they are going to get drinking Guinness at the pub, Twitter users are talking about sex.

The hashtag "sexisbest" has risen to the top of Twitter's trending topics this morning as microbloggers share the places and the times when sex is best for them.

Further down Twitter's list of trending topics are the sex-related terms "#SinceWeNotSexin" and "#SEXisTheBest".

The top 10 most talked about topics on Twitter on March 17 at 9:30 AM GMT are:
