Letter: Scottish nationalism is about the English, and it isn't benign
Why does Neil Ascherson go on so? The lad from Peebles would probably have liked buttered "muffings" better if he had eaten them in Aberdeen rather than in Essex; and he might have resented Essex-man less if the result at Culloden had been a home win - so what? That is our common fate but we all know that there is nothing intrinsically good in being either Scots or English. "Je suis anglais/ecossais, et j'en suis fier" sounds stupid in any language.
