British universities are beginning to respond to student concerns about value for money in the era of top-up fees. We know because Manchester University and now the London School of Economics are putting more emphasis on teaching.

At the LSE, where more than half the undergraduates are from overseas, and therefore paying through the nose for their degrees, a £2m push has been announced, which involves recruiting more lecturers and rewarding good teaching. The LSE consciously took a leaf out of Harvard's book. How long before other universities realise that it is in their interests to do the same?
